This is so very sad. Jim was a gentleman among scholars, and a scholar among gentle folk. Like Shantarakshita, whom he studied, he was an effective agent of the cross-cultural transmission of Buddhism, with a warm heart and a sharp mind. My condolences go out to his family and to his colleagues, friends, and students at Maitripa and OSU.
